Typically, an estate tax return is due within nine month from the date of death. The retrospective date of value used often is the date of death; however, an alternative valuation date that falls within 6-months from the date of death, may also be used for valuation purposes. Using an alternative valuation date can be advantageous if property values have decline since the date of death, which would reduce the estate tax liability.
